Salad Days

Between thunderstorms we’re celebrating the salad days of summer. The thunderstorms have been a daily occurrence.

No swimming in the river to beat the heat. {But Paul’s watermelon cocktail on July Fourth was a good idea.}

And salad.

The row of mixed lettuces of lime, purple, burgundy and viridian is thriving in these wet days. Spells of intense sun and heat help the tomatoes along, but the spinach bolted last weekend. Still, the lettuce goes on. I keep thinking I’ll soon wake to a withered mess.

Then the chickens will get a feast.129twigandvine, watermelon cocktails, photo © Sue Schlabach129twigandvine_cherry_tomatoes © Sue Schlabach

I can’t remember a summer with so many storms. I’m sprouting mushrooms!

Love your photos. And is that where the phrase ‘salad days’ came from? Interesting. Love a nice watermelon cocktail, too!

I just had the term ‘salad days’ epiphany this year. I assume that it’s derived from the early harvests while waiting for bigger sustenance crops. Be well!

I hope you had a great salad. Ours had grated beets, fresh peas and slivers of peppers.

I will try it! I have most of those things. Have you ever flash-sauteed watermelon for salad? Sounds strange, but is really tasty! Take care.

Oh wow, I had to translate “flash-sauté” and even look the German word up in the dictionnary 😉 but now I got it and it sounds so super strange but I will defenatly try it the next time!

Your salad days shots are so very healthy and appealing looking. I grow nasturtiums for salads, too. So peppery and yummy!

Thanks! I just weeded the row of nasturtiums. I love the pepper taste and the jewel colors. Happy gardening!
